BHES Hosts Engaging Math Parent Coffee Event
Okinawa, Japan – Bob Hope Elementary School welcomed families of kindergarten through fifth grade students to its Math Parent Coffee Engagement on September 24, 2025, for a morning of learning, collaboration, and hands-on exploration of math instruction.
Strategic Math Interventionists Michael Callahan and Angie Fino led the session, guiding parents through key topics including College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics (CCRSM), math fluency expectations, and the Reveal Math curriculum adopted by DoDEA.
Parents participated in grade-level activities designed to mirror classroom instruction, such as composing and decomposing numbers in kindergarten and solving multi-digit division problems using an area model in Grade 5. The event emphasized the importance of conceptual understanding and strategy-based problem solving. The Reveal Math program was showcased as a comprehensive resource for students and families, offering digital assignments, interactive tools, and vocabulary support accessible through DoDEA’s ClassLink portal.
Feedback from attendees highlighted the value of the session.
“I learned new strategies for solving problems and how to support my child’s math fluency at home, “ one parent shared.
“The hands-on activities and visual aids helped me understand what my child is learning in school,” another parent said.
The event concluded with tips for supporting math learning at home.
“We’re incredibly thankful for the strong turnout and the opportunity to share with parents what their children experience in math class each day,” said Michael Callahan. “It was inspiring to see parents collaborating, asking questions, and engaging in meaningful discussions as they solved problems using manipulatives. The energy in the room was fantastic.”
BHES continues to foster strong school-home partnerships by equipping families with tools and knowledge to support student success in mathematics.
